Ceesepe, the Madrileño artist with the single name, paints in series, creating upward of three hundred works in a season, and his sequential style makes for a seductive restlessness. Like another Spaniard – his contemporary Mariscal, the Catalan with whom he founded the underground magazine El Vibora in the seventies – Ceesepe moves easily between the worlds of art and commerce. Asked to pin down some influences, he shrugs and rattles off a few: Modigliani, Art Spiegelman, Maurice Chevalier – “sort of a blender of influences”. In “Amour Apache”, at left, his polish is hard to miss: loose, surehanded draftsmanship; Cubist shifts in perspective; and a signature smolder.
